Lesson 43

Every time I turn around, months go by. It's August. You're going to be starting first grade in 13 days. I'm doing much better this year, last year I'd be in tears by now. We've spent our summer completing your bucket list. I had to come up with a bucket list for your 1st summer, it worked out so well that it might become a yearly tradition for us. We've gone to the movies, parks, trampoline parks, fed ducks, next week we're going to Legoland and the planetarium. We've done 1 "fun" thing a week all summer. I was looking at photos and videos of you just the other day. Some just a year old, some from when you were 7 weeks old. Even back then I can see your personality. You're such a happy kid. Every thing is funny right now, especially if it has the word butt or poop in it. I think that being in school has made you appreciate NOT being in school so much. Which brings me to lesson 43.

One day, you're going to have a job. I hope it's a great job, with great pay, doing something you love. But still, it's going to be a job. Learn to let it go and have play time. You might not be able to just be 100% "off the clock" as soon as you leave, but set firm boundaries on work time. Dad sometimes has to work all night long if something breaks at work. That doesn't happen as often as it used to, but ever since you were born, he makes sure that he's doing what he can to keep work at work so that he can spend time with you. Working hard is great, but the reason you work hard is so you can also enjoy life. Go to the movies, go on trips... do something other than just sitting at a desk all day and worrying about work.
